Johannesburg – The Automobile Association (AA) says that it is too early to predict whether a significant reduction in fuel prices is a sign of things coming in the new year.

The Energy Department has announced that you will be spending Rs.181 crores less in petrol liter on Wednesday, while diesel will be priced at Rs.1,45 cents.

At the beginning of this year, after raising several hikes, the prices were hiked to record at higher levels, which is seen as a huge relief for the discontinued customers.

AA's Leton Beard said: "The very important thing is that diesel prices have come down. The impact on the economy is seen in the context of many small businesses and input costs for the farm sector."

However, he says there is a possibility of a decline in the new year.

"Looking at the numbers it's hard to say how it looks like in January. I think this trend will continue with oil prices and with the exchange rate / rand / US dollar.

"If Rand has been confirmed in the last few weeks, if that trend persists, we can see another decline in January, though it is very important to say that."
