LOS ANGELES, Aug 13 (Xinhua) – Researchers at the University of Irvine (UCI), a university in the US, have found that using hookah waterpipes is more dangerous than other forms of smoking, according to its first study. ).
Using a custom-built test device, UCI chemists analyzed emissions during a special communal waterpipe session and discovered that a whole cigarette smoke drawn from a pipe could contain as harmful substances.
This study is published in the latest issue of Aerosol Science and Technology.
"Hookah mainstream smoke – which is inhaled directly by the consumer – contains many toxic and harmful chemicals, such as nicotine, can lead to tobacco addiction; carbonyl compounds inflammation; and benzene is a well-known carcinogen," Main. Author Veronique said. Peraud, UCI Assistant Project Scientist in the Department of Chemistry.
"Due to the amount of breathing for each puff and the length of the smoking session, the hookah often releases a high dose of those chemicals to the smoker," said Peraud.
According to the study, the water pipe also produces an outsized amount of carbon monoxide, mainly from burning coal to heat the tobacco or herbal mixture in its bowl.
In addition to testing common tobacco, the group studied nicotine-free herbal blends, marketed it as a healthy alternative, and found that it had higher levels of toxic gases in mainstream smoke.
"One of the major myths about hookah use is that the water in the bowl filters out toxic chemicals and provides a smoker with it."
"In the study, we show that this is not the case for most gases, and probably because of its cooling effect, water actually promotes the formation of ultrafine particles." Enditam
