2-year-old boy died after contracting E. coli at Patting Zoo News

A 2-year-old child died after giving E. coli awards at the Patting Zoo as part of the San Diego County Fair.

According to the County of San Diego's Health and Human Services Agency, this boy was one of four children who contacted E. coli from the fair.

The age of four infected children was 2 to 13 years old.

Officials said they are still investigating the exact cause of the infection, but all the children have been told to contact the animals in the fairs.

"Our sympathetic child's family dies by this illness," Dr. Wilma J. Wooten, a public health official in County said in a statement. "Most people have become critical of this disease soon, but 5 to 10 percent of STEC's diagnoses develop life-threatening kidney infections."

E. Coli is a bacterium found in the stomach of humans and animals and is usually harmless, but some nuisances can cause diarrhea, vomiting and severe pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, children are more likely to come down with malignant kidney infections and organ failure.

The Health Department said it has tested food vendors at the exhibition center and found no contamination.

San Diego County Fair General Manager Tim Fennell said in a news conference Friday, "Unfortunately, we spent about three hours a small child," he passed.
